Reading First

What is Reading First?

The purpose of Reading First is to ensure that all children in America learn to read well by the end of third grade. Reading First grants provide assistance for schools to apply scientifically based reading research to improve K-3 reading instruction and students' reading achievement.

Brewster School District received a Reading First grant in the 2003-04 school year. This grant was guaranteed for three years with an additional three years being contingent upon meeting specific criteria at the end of each year. We have continued to meet this criteria and are now in our fifth year of the grant.
In order to have the grant renewed for the sixth and final year we must have 65% of students at benchmark (grade level) in three out of four grades (Kindergarten through 3rd), with one of the three grades having to be third.
